Create an easy to duplicate template for Squarespace blog posts

easy to duplicate Squarespace blog post template

Of course you are on top of it and consistently writing blog posts, right? We know that consistency is key and that should really be the only hard part of blogging, not the formatting of your blog post each time! Creating your blog post page should be as easy as copy and paste! Or as you’ll soon learn, duplicate and post! In other words, you need a pretty pre-formatted blog page template so that each blog post that you write is a consistently designed page that you don’t have to recreate each time.

So then how do you create a blog page template?

It all begins with an idea. And a new blog post. Or an existing post.

To create a new blog post template from a blank page

from the Home Menu, go to Website. You are now on the Pages menu. Go to your Blog page and click on the + in the upper right corner.

From there, start designing your blog post template. This can include elements that you want on each post such as image blocks, an affiliate disclaimer, Related Posts, Newsletter opt-ins, etc. This saves so much more time rather than starting from scratch with each post! Since Squarespace doesn’t have a limit on the number of blog pages you can create, you are free to create as many blog post templates as you may need.

Your title is the name of the post. For my blog post template, I have named it “Template to Duplicate”. This way I know it’s my template and it’s also a good reminder to duplicate it first so you don’t accidentally use your template for your post! :) You’ll know you remembered to duplicate it if the new title has (Copy) at the end of it.

When you save your post, it automatically saves as a DRAFT. After you are done designing and saving your template, it’s now ready for duplicating as needed.

After you start posting a bunch of blogs, you will have a LONG list of published blog posts, and then your template draft will be somewhere in that list. To easily find it, in the use Filter by at the top and choose Draft.

Another couple of options that I also just learned is to:

  • Schedule your template to post on a date sometime way in the future! The idea behind this is for your template to always be at the top of your list of blog posts.

(To get to the Settings from the blog menu, click on the three dots next to the blog post. From the OPTIONS menu, click on Status and choose Scheduled.)

Remember to reschedule it once that future date gets closer so you don’t accidentally post your template on that future date!

OR …

  • Schedule a Draft for some time in the future.
To do this, follow the steps for scheduling your post in the future (see #1 above). Save that. Then open your settings again and change it back to Draft. It should keep your scheduled date so it is now a future-dated draft and will remain at the top of your list (until after that date at least).

Blogging Template TIP: Be sure to have your template post settings set as you’d like so those are also duplicated with each post. To learn how to set up A good blog post with all the settings in Squarespace 7.1 read that post too!

To simply create a blog page template using an existing blog post design

from your Blog page, choose the blog post that you would like to duplicate as your template.

Hover over the post and click on the three dots to the right. Click on SETTINGS.

From the Content menu, scroll down to the bottom and click DUPLICATE.

This will create a duplicate of that post which you can then rename to something so you will know it is your Blog Post Template. Make any changes that you see fit for the template or each post.

Now you can easily continue your blogging journey! Happy blogging!
